If you've got a Zune media player, you need video. They go
together like LA and bad traffic. Otherrwise you may as well
have just gotten another MP3 player. As you've discovered,
you can't just upload any DVD or video download to your
Zune. First you have to convert the video file to a format the
Zune can use. Being a Microsoft device, the Zune will use the
Windows Media Video (WMV) format. Your player can also digest
the following video formats:
  • MPEG4 Video (m4v)
  • QuickTme (MP4pt2)
  • H.264
  • Windows Media Center DVR (Vista only)

If you have video in  other formats you'd like to play on your
Zune, you'll need to convert them. Other popular video formats
you'll find include:
DivX, XviD, MPEG2, MOV, MPG, MOD, QuickTime, MP4, 3GP,
3G2, SWF, GIF, DV, MJPEG, VOB, ASF, and AVI.

You probably want to play YouTube videos on your Zune. The
problem is that YouTube videos are shown in the Flash (.flv)
format. It uses the H.263 video codec. That's great for
conserving bandwith on the web, but .flv files are not Zune
compatable, so if you want to play YouTube videos on your
Zune, you'll have to convert them.

The good news is that there are some excellent file converters
available for converting Zune audio and video files. You can not
only convert the files to play on your zune, but if you'd like to
store movies or other video on your laptop, thumb drive, or SD
card, these will let you do that while taking up minimum space.
With most of converters you can adjust the compression rate,
frame rate, and resolution to strike the best balance between
video quality and storage space required.

A video converter will let you -
  • Change video files to a format that your Zune will accept
  • Optimize resolution, frame rate and compression rate to
strike the best balance between storage space and quality
    for your particular purpose

Here are the best Zune video converters we've found so far -

1 -
Moyea FLV to Video Converter Pro
This works very well, and is pretty fast too. They're a real
company (unlike so many of the 1 man, fly by night stuff you
find) and have a free trial version you can use to try it out and
see if it works for you. They have great support too, which can
be a lifesaver when you run into those little problems that seem
to crop up when you're using software.

Download your free trial of Moyea FLV to Video Converter Pro
here. Pass it out to your friends if you like it as much as we do.
You can just send them the link or email them the download
directly.

2 - The Free Zune Video Converter
Well, the name kind of says it all. It's free and it converts video
for your Zune. Unlike many free products, this one is actually
fairly decent. Not as complete or fast as the Moyea, and the
interface isn't as easy to use, but hey, it's free. Although it isn't a
speed demon, but there's no advertising to contend with as
with some other so-called "free" apps. Some users report minor
bugs, such as some files not converting into English, but these
incidents are few and far between. It is very easy to use, even
for those with little experience.
